Which fish are allowed on the Tayyibat diet?

4 min read

Yes

Wild fish, yes. Farmed fish, no. Sardines, tuna, sea bass, sea bream, sole, grouper and wild salmon are his own rulings, all yes. Tilapia, farmed salmon, shrimp and squid are his own rulings, all no. The line is the same one that runs through the whole system: what the animal ate, and where.

Grilled sardines

The yes list

Sardines. Small fish that do not live long carry very little mercury. Eat them whole, bones and all. Grilled sardines with roast potatoes in ghee is a protein day in the book.

Tuna. A hunter that eats other fish. That makes it one of the clean eaters the system keeps.

Wild salmon. That pink colour is astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant. Farmed salmon is a different animal, and a no.

Sea bass, sea bream, sole, grouper. Clean white flesh, wild caught.

Crab: yes, his own ruling. Mackerel, anchovy, herring, cod and mullet are on the yes list too, following from his rules; he never named them.

The no list

Tilapia, farmed salmon, farmed sea bass, farmed trout. What an animal eats becomes what you eat. Factory feed changes the fat in the flesh and strips away what made the fish worth eating. This is the same rule that excludes chicken.

Shrimp and squid. Shrimp eat whatever settles on the seabed. The system keeps only clean eaters: fish that hunt or graze in open water.

Fish roe: no, his own ruling.

Canned fish?

He never ruled on tins by name. The fish inside follows its own verdict: sardines and tuna are yes. Read the label for what else is in the tin. Fish and salt in olive oil or water is real food. A sauce with a list of ingredients you would not recognise as food is not.

How to eat it

One animal protein per plate, on a protein day, every other day. Grilled fish and a plain starch is on every menu in the world. Ask for it without sauce.

People also ask

Is tilapia allowed on the Tayyibat diet?

No, his own ruling. Tilapia is farmed on factory feed, and what the fish eats becomes what you eat.

Is canned tuna allowed?

He never ruled on tins by name. Tuna itself is his own ruling, yes. Read the tin: fish, salt and olive oil or water is real food; a sauce with unrecognisable ingredients is not.

Why is shrimp forbidden?

His own ruling. Shrimp eat whatever settles on the seabed, and the system keeps only clean eaters.

Is salmon allowed?

Wild salmon, yes, his own ruling. Farmed salmon, no, his own ruling. Most salmon in shops is farmed, so ask.
