Why are lemon and citrus off the Tayyibat diet?

5 min read

No

Dr. Al-Awadi ruled out orange and mandarin himself, both a no. Lemon, lime, grapefruit and the rest of the citrus family are not named one by one. They are off because they carry the same acid his rule points at.

Lemons, limes and oranges on a stone counter with a squeezer, not allowed on the Tayyibat diet

The rule: too much acid, too fast

His reason is the same for the whole family. Your stomach already makes acid to digest your food. Citrus fruit adds more on top of it. That extra acid gets in the way of digesting protein and irritates the gut lining, the same lining several of his other rules try to protect.

That one rule, too much acid, covers about 25 foods in the book, not only citrus. Citrus is simply the clearest case of it.

He ruled on orange and mandarin himself. The rest follow from that.

Read the food list closely and the provenance splits in two.

Orange and mandarin: his own ruling, no, both times.

Lemon, lime, grapefruit, and every other citrus fruit, blood orange, clementine, tangerine, pomelo, kumquat, and the rest of them: he never named these one by one. They follow from the rule on orange and mandarin, because the acid is the same acid. Read the rule and every one of them is off. He simply never said their names.

Lemon water, lemon on fish, lemon in tea

The verdict follows the fruit, not the dish. A squeeze of lemon on grilled fish, lemon in a glass of water first thing in the morning, lemon stirred into tea: all of it is lemon, and lemon follows the rule on citrus. There is no separate reading for a small amount of it.

What people use instead of lemon

The book keeps a short list of pantry basics for flavour, and between them they cover most of what lemon used to do on a plate.

Olive oil. His own ruling, on the yes list. It is the fat the system reaches for on bread, on cooked vegetables, and on salad greens once they are dressed rather than eaten raw.

A halved pomegranate and a jug of olive oil beside a green salad, both allowed on the Tayyibat diet

Sumac. Follows from his rules. He never named it directly, but the reasoning that keeps herbs and ground spices on the yes list covers it too. Sumac is a dark red spice ground from a dried berry, with a sharp, tart edge close to what people reach for lemon to get. It is the main flavour in fattoush and in the spice mix zaatar.

Pomegranate. His own ruling, yes. The seeds or the juice add a real tartness alongside their sweetness, closer to what lemon gives a dish than most substitutes on the list.

Salt. Follows from his rules. Plain salt, used the ordinary way.

None of these are lemon. They are simply what is left on the yes list once lemon is off it, and cooks in the region used them long before citrus became the automatic reach for a squeeze of sour.

What this is not

This describes digestion, not a treatment for gastritis, ulcers or reflux disease. If you have a diagnosed stomach condition, or take medicine for one, talk to your doctor before changing what you eat.

People also ask

Did Dr. Al-Awadi rule on lemon himself, or does it follow from his rules?

He ruled on orange and mandarin himself, both no. Lemon follows from that same rule on acid; he never named lemon separately.

Is lime allowed on the Tayyibat diet?

No, following from his rules. Lime is a citrus fruit, the same acid, the same rule as orange.

Can I put lemon on fish or in a salad dressing?

No. The verdict follows the fruit, not the dish. Use olive oil, sumac or pomegranate instead.

Is olive oil allowed as a dressing?

Yes, his own ruling. It is one of the fats the system keeps, used on bread, cooked vegetables and dressed greens.

What gives food a tangy taste instead of lemon?

Sumac, following from his rules, and pomegranate seeds or juice, his own ruling. Both are on the yes list.
