What is the Tayyibat diet?
The Tayyibat diet is a way of eating taught by Dr. Diaa Al-Awadi, an Egyptian intensive-care doctor. It keeps the foods people have eaten for thousands of years, drops the ones a factory made, and adds six rules about when and how to eat. More than a million people followed it. This site lists 575 foods, each ruled yes or no.

The name
Tayyibat is Arabic, الطيبات. It means "the wholesome things." That is the whole idea in one word: eat what is wholesome, leave what is not, and let the body do the rest.
The list that made people furious
On the plate: white rice, potatoes, dates, butter, sugar, lamb, olive oil, honey, aged cheese.
Off the plate: chicken, eggs, milk, yoghurt, salad, lentils, most raw vegetables, and anything made in a factory.
Read that again. It turns almost every piece of nutrition advice you were given upside down. The grilled chicken breast and the green salad, the meal you were told was the responsible choice, he took off the plate. The butter and the white rice, the two things you were taught to fear, he put at the centre.
His reasons are not slogans. Each food has one, and you can read it on that food's page. Chicken is out because of what modern chickens are fed. Milk is out because most adults cannot digest milk sugar, and aged cheese stays because time has already done that digesting. Lettuce is out because it passes through you mostly undigested.
The five foods you build on
Every day rests on the same five: white rice, potatoes, dates, natural butter and sugar. Clean, fast, complete fuels the body has known for thousands of years, and none of them arrives with a factory label.
The six rules
He said the rules matter more than the list.
- Eat only when truly hungry. If a plain boiled potato would not do, it is not hunger.
- Stop before you are full. Fullness arrives about fifteen minutes late.
- Two or three items on the plate. Rice with lamb. Potatoes with fish. Never a buffet.
- Drink when thirsty. Water, mostly between meals. Never restrict water when you are thirsty.
- Keep the fasting rhythm. Mondays, Thursdays, and the three white days of the lunar month. Fasting is optional.
- Animal protein a day on, a day off. One animal protein per plate, never two.
The one-sentence version, from the book: eat only from the allowed list, only when truly hungry, until comfortably satisfied, two or three items to a plate, water when thirsty, animal protein every other day, and let Mondays and Thursdays be quiet.
Who Dr. Diaa Al-Awadi was
Not a diet guru. Dr. Al-Awadi trained at Ain Shams University in Cairo and worked for years as a consultant anaesthesiologist and intensive-care physician. He watched who arrived in intensive care, night after night, and concluded that most of it had been cooked, canned, fried and sweetened long before it was diagnosed. So he gave the whole system away for free, in plain Egyptian Arabic, on Facebook and YouTube.
In March 2026 the Egyptian Medical Syndicate struck him off. In April 2026 he died in Dubai, aged 47. In May a state body ordered his recordings removed from the internet. His story, with sources.
Why this site exists
Because his work is being deleted in the country where it was made. Everything here was gathered from his own recordings before they disappeared. Where he ruled on a food himself, the page says so. Where a verdict only follows from his rules, the page says that too, and never calls it his ruling. 154 of the 575 foods are his own rulings.
Where this site draws the line
In his recordings he told people food would replace their medicine. This site does not follow him there. Never stop, reduce or replace a prescribed medicine because of anything you read here. If eating this way changes your numbers, that is a conversation with your doctor. Is the Tayyibat diet safe?
People also ask
What does Tayyibat mean?
Tayyibat, الطيبات, is Arabic for "the wholesome things." The system is also called nizam al-tayyibat, the Tayyibat system.
Is the Tayyibat diet the same as the Sunnah diet?
Not quite. It draws on foods and fasting days from Islamic tradition, but it is Dr. Al-Awadi's own system, with his own rulings on hundreds of foods. This site reports his system, not a religious ruling.
Is the Tayyibat diet halal?
It is a way of eating, not a religious ruling, and every food on it is halal. Leaving chicken or eggs off your plate is a health choice, not a religious one.
Is there an English version of the Tayyibat food list?
Yes. This site lists every food in English with the reason, and the book is available in English, French and Arabic.
Is the Tayyibat diet scientifically proven?
No diet is proven in that sense. Each rule here rests on named chemistry, lactose, lectins, oxalates, refined starch, autophagy, and the book states it and its limits plainly. It also states where it draws the line.
